Product Review: Juniper & Salt Wooden Spoons

As part of my new regular series on reviewing kitchen products, I want to share a product review of a new-ish company called Juniper & Salt. They make craftsman kitchen utensils. I know that sounds a little bit like an episode of Portlandia but as someone who gives their wooden spoons quite a workout. I know I good one when I see it. Read on for my review of Juniper & Salt's angled spatula and wooden spoon.

juniper & salt is a family-run business that sells premium, handmade kitchen utensils "for the cook that believes preparing food should be as satisfying as eating it". Founded by hollis wright and laura pait, they tell me that their "wooden utensils are the perfect companion to help the chef values form and function in the kitchen. Each utensil is made by skilled craftsmen using slow-growth, hearty wood. And unlike metal or plastic, our utensils won’t scratch, melt, or degrade with use."

On their about page, they note that their "products are made of slow growth woods naturally grown in a cold climate that are denser than mass-produced, mass-growth wood. Each piece is made of wood hand-picked for its quality and uniqueness."

the angled spatula

when i got the package in the mail, i will admit the angled spatula was a little visually confusing. I was like, wtf. 

But, I quickly realized this angled spatula was a game changer. I remembered that the vast majority of what i eat is something i sauteed in a pan.

This spatula did something remarkable. It innovated a manual, analog piece of hardware in a way that is incredibly customer centric and thoughtfully designed. The length of the spatula is really natural for me. The little hook at the top keeps it from sliding into the food when you rest the spatula on your skillet or pot. 

juniper & salt notes that their "spatulas specifically [are] shaped for left and right-handed people to support the natural angle of your dominant hand and hook-handled spatulas and spoons can be hung near the stove for quick access when needed."

i seriously love this spatula.

the wooden teaspoon

for me, this is a great basic, but less of an urgent buy. I have a zillion wooden spoons and i'm not sure this supersedes any I already have. It certainly is very pretty and is great for serving, as well as food styling/food photography.

bottom line recommendation

i highly recommend the angled spatula! This is a really good product with great design and execution. An angled spatula that works with how you naturally stir and sautee food, as well as doesn't fall into your food when you set it on the side. This is my new go-to sauteeing aparatus. a+

i like but don't love the basic wood spoon. I'll use it in my photography styling and entertaining/serving, but see myself using it less in cooking.
